For diving at greater depths a mixture of oxygen and helium is necessary. This mixture, called heliox, is also used in medicine to treat respiratory diseases.
Gas mixing systems produce the heliox in the low pressure range. Since these are high purity gases, HOFER diaphragm compressors are used, which compress to a filling pressure of 200 or 300 bar for diving cylinders. The changing helium content in the gas mixture is a particular challenge when engineering these compressors.
