Terephthalic acid (PTA) is the main raw material for the most important polymer in the plastics industry and thus the basic material for the manufacture of plastic products and modern synthetic fibres. Terephthalic acid is converted from pure dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) or a DMT intermediate to a solid product by hydrolysis in a countercurrent reactor. The hydrogen required for this process step is usually supplied to the reactor at a pressure of 28 bar using a diaphragm compressor. HOFER has been supplying diaphragm compressors for this application, which places high demands on specifications, since 1980.
